WHAT IS A SALT AND PEPPER DIAMOND?
You may have heard of the 4 Cs scale, which was developed to assess the flaws in a white diamond. Diamonds at the further end of the clarity scale show noticeable imperfections or flaws (rated I). On the opposite end (VVS), the discolouration and inclusions are too tiny to perceive with the naked eye.
Salt and pepper diamonds are extensively included diamonds; if graded, they would be at the extreme end of the GIA scale (I2, I3). However, because these inclusions are what distinguishes these diamonds, the grading system is not actually applicable.
They are known as ‘Salt and Pepper’ or ‘Galaxy’ diamonds due to their cosmic, night sky look. ‘Pepper’ refers to black particles, while’salt’ refers to ice white inclusions. Of course, other hues exist, sometimes in earthier tones that go beyond stark black and white.
Historically, these diamonds were regarded as unattractive. The objective was always crystal-clear, see-through white diamonds. Only recently have people begun to appreciate the richness, complexity, and genuinely unusual appearance of a salt and pepper diamond.
